Leadership Updates

June 1, 2021

Dear CFC Family,

We pray and hope that God is keeping you and drawing you closer to Him in these difficult times.  Thank you for your partnership in our church and in the Gospel.

First and foremost, our hearts break for those who may have been hurt during their time at CFC. It grieves us that some people experienced pain from a place that is supposed to offer the Good News of freedom, healing, and grace found in Jesus Christ.  We acknowledge the shortcomings of this ministry and its leaders.  Despite our weaknesses and failures, our sincere desire is to raise kingdom workers for the Glory of God.

For those that may have been hurt in the process, we hear you and are committed to a better future.  We are examining ourselves and our church so that we can better minister to the people that God has called us to serve.

As we prepare for the congregational meeting on June 6th, we recognize that the breadth and impact of information we will be presenting can be significant and hard to process in one sitting.  Therefore, in a genuine effort to bring clarity and transparency to the current crisis at CFC, we will be sending out information throughout the week leading up to this meeting.

In recent years, CFC has gone through a transition in leadership from Pastor Min Chung to the current Senior Leadership Team as well as introducing the Lay Oversight Board, who has only been serving for ten months. Pastor Min has not been leading at CFC in any capacity since August of 2019 and he will have no voice in the future. Since many of the accusations are directed at him personally, as well as a time period when he was largely the authority, the board has unanimously decided that we need the clarity of distance [please see the full letter below concerning our decision regarding Pastor Min and his future released on June 1st].

The Oversight Board is meeting regularly to prioritize the future health of CFC.  We recognize that we have not communicated in a timely manner.  That will change.  We felt the tension of wanting to communicate quickly, but not misspeak.  We want to be transparent in acknowledging that we should have spoken earlier and we are working on a strategy for consistent communication moving forward.  You will hear more about this at the congregation meeting.

In light of 1) the overwhelming challenge in front of us and 2) the questions regarding our own leadership, we have engaged The Center Consulting Group to help us evaluate and give deeper insight into our current leadership and church practices. With the help of the Center Consulting Group, we will be making significant changes to the culture and ministry practice of CFC.

We plan on providing a more comprehensive update at this upcoming congregation meeting that will be held on June 6, 2021.

Sincerely,
The Oversight Board

Dear CFC Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we come to you to share some important news regarding Covenant Fellowship Church (CFC) and Pastor Min Chung.  The Oversight Board met on Thursday, May 27th and voted unanimously to completely separate from Pastor Min effective immediately.  Pastor Min will no longer receive any ongoing financial support, and he will no longer practice ministry in any capacity with CFC.

The Oversight Board was brought together ten months ago to provide leadership and guidance to the pastors, leaders, and people of CFC.  Little did we know that we would have to come to you with such difficult news.

We recognize that this news is difficult to receive, and it may evoke difficult memories or emotions for some.  While the church is a gathering of broken, imperfect people, the call of the Pastor and church leaders requires a robust and growing faith in Christ.  We are grieved by the hurt we have heard expressed by a number of brothers and sisters, and it is our intent to address the issues that are brought to our attention stemming from Pastor Min’s leadership. We also recognize that this may elicit a number of questions. As we work through this situation, we will provide additional information on the church website under cfchome.org/leadership-updates.

The Oversight Board of CFC continues to meet regularly and pray fervently.  In these times of difficulty we find a deeper trust in God that will sustain us and we put our full trust in God.  The Oversight Board is also seeking outside counsel/consultation as we navigate the crisis of CFC.

Our hope remains in the Lord. We know that He is good. We appreciate your continued prayers.

Sincerely,
The Oversight Board
