Our History

In August of 1990, God planted Covenant Fellowship Church (CFC) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with the vision of producing kingdom workers. God placed Matthew 9:37-38 on Reverend Min Chung's heart: "the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." The “few” indicates not only the quantity, but the quality of the workers. With 120 college students on the first Sunday at the Great Hall in Wesley Church, Covenant Fellowship Church, initially called Korean Christian Fellowship, was birthed.

With the core principles being centered on Word and prayer, God continued to build our church. God brought many college students to CFC— not only from Illinois, but from all over world.

As CFC continued to grow, members from different life stages joined our church. The Graduate Bible Study (GBS) ministry was formed as many graduate students joined. The Adult & Family Ministry (AFM) was developed as a growing number of people considered Champaign-Urbana their home after graduating from college. The educational ministry, which consists of Nursery, Sunday School, and Youth Group, blossomed as families grew. Today, there are over 175 children in our education ministry. Our prayer is that God would raise up the future generation of Kingdom Workers.

In January of 2020, CFC transitioned from being under the leadership of Reverend Min Chung to a team leadership model. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) comprises of Reverend David Kang, Reverend KJ Kim, Reverend Sean Lee, who are currently lead pastors together. Pastor Tim Rhee serves as the assistant pastor. Today, Covenant Fellowship Church is home to over a thousand members in different life stages and to over twenty different ethno-linguistic groups.
