Staff
If you've been to summer league at CRCE or ARC before, you may have seen the people who sit next to each of the courts who diligently keep track of stats, score, and time, or the people who have massive cameras taking action shots of the players. If you think we pay them, we don't. They are volunteering their Saturday nights to help Summer League operate. They are our AWESOME STAFF!!!
Being on staff is a great way for people to help out, learn the game of basketball, and cheer on their friends/family! (You also get a FREE t-shirt**) Staff are crucial to help carry out Summer League functions. Without staff, we would have no stats (yes, we know there are some of you, Vince Lee, who check the stats everyday), no one to keep score or time, no one to take awesome photo shots of our players, no one to keep the games going on time so that we're all out of there by 2:00am, and fewer people cheering on the players.

So, what does a staff person do?
1) STATS. Stats makes it fun for the players to see how they are doing compared to the other players. The first day of Summer League (June 26th), we will have a meeting for all our STAFF to go over how to record stats and all other STAFF items. If you've never taken stats before, don't worry! You'll be working in pairs. If you would like to be paired up with a veteran, just ask :) If you would like a more in-depth description of how to take stats, I may post another article just on stat taking.
2) SCORE. This is pretty simple. When someone scores 1, 2, or 3 points, you add that number to the current number. Remember to check with the stats takers to make sure what they have written down is the same as what is on the score board.
3) TIMER. Timing is pretty key! At the beginning of the game, you don't have to worry about stopping the time at time-outs, free throws, etc. However, the last couple minutes of the game, you'll have to be quite attentive to stop the clock. Oh, don't forget to have a loud voice to count down the last 10 seconds for the players!
4) PHOTOGRAPHY. Photography is going to be key this summer. We don't have as many photographers as we did last year so please! Volunteer if you are a photographer, like taking pictures, or are interested in learning and have a camera! Players like their stats, but they also like it when their faces are plastered on the website :) Let's give the players something to look forward to!
What qualifications do you need to be on staff?
Just a friendly smile and willingness to help out!
So, now you know how important staff are! If you see them working hard, don't forget to tell them how much you appreciate their hard work :)
**Because T-shirts cost money and we're hoping to get 20-30 staff volunteers, to receive a free t-shirt, we ask that you volunteer at least 3 of the 5 days. :)
